NFL and NFLPA Sports Nutrition Label Certification Program

Over five years of collaborative effort by the NFLPA, the NFL and NSF have gone into developing the Sports Nutrition Label Certification Program. This program is available to NFLPA members to help ensure that athletes have access to safe, clean and reliable sports nutrition products. The Certification Program's rigorous testing and certification process ensures that approved products—those bearing the Label Certification Program logo—fully comply with current NFL/NFLPA Banned Substance Policy. Additionally, these products have been independently tested to verify that they contain only what is stated on the label.

The Certification Program addresses the needs of the modern professional football athlete:

• Offers NFL players Certified Product options so they will not unknowingly consume Prohibited Substances via their nutrition products.
• Reduces the likelihood of NFL players testing positive for Prohibited Substances consumed unintentionally.
• Verifies that Certified Products contain the identity and quantities of ingredients listed on the Certified Product label and are free of Prohibited Substances.
• Provides a mechanism for third-party evaluation for the metabolites of Certified Product formulations.

Certified products must meet not only the strict NSF Dietary Supplement and Functional Foods programs requirements but also:

1. Formula Evaluation - NSF provides confidential review of Certified Product formulations to screen for Prohibited Substances.
2. Good Manufacturing Practices - Production facilities and packaging facilities, for Certified Products, are inspected to ensure controls are in place to avoid the introduction of, or contamination with, Prohibited Substances.
3. Clinical Testing for Metabolites - At the client's request, NSF will oversee clinical testing to determine if any ingredients metabolize into Prohibited Substances.
4. Chain-of-Custody Procedures - Each Certified Product lot tested for Prohibited Substances must be collected by an NSF auditor. All Certified Products pending testing are held by the manufacturer under locked quarantine until NSF notifies the manufacturer of successful test results.
